My recent work is a series of paintings that illustrate the joy, frustration, irony, and comedy of being a little girl. Little girls today are growing up in a world full of inconsistencies and contradictions. They are expected to be soft and sweet, while at the same time, they are encouraged to be independent, competitive, and ambitious. Today’s girls are stuck with the burden of juggling two personas. A lucky few are able to pull it off with the delicately balanced grace of a tomboy in a pink tutu. Others simply pick one role, are labeled a “girly-girl” or a “tomboy”, and then ignore the fall-out from not satisfying that alter-ego stereotype. And then still, some try desperately to fulfill all of society’s expectations, but are left with a disillusioned sense of identity & self-image. By catering to all the inconsistencies and double standards levied by the people who love them, these girls arrive at an emotional plateau of uncertainty and insecurity… just in time for their teen years.
